Indian aerospace company Skyroot Aerospace has successfully conducted the first orbital launch of its Vikram-1 rocket. The event marked a historic moment for India’s private space sector, as it was the first time a rocket fully developed and built by a private Indian company reached orbit independently.
The launch took place on July 18, 2026, at 10:35 AM Moscow time from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on Sriharikota Island in India. Approximately 15 minutes after liftoff, the rocket deployed its payload into a low Earth orbit at an altitude of about 450 kilometers, confirming the successful execution of the mission.
The mission was named Aagaman and became the first orbital launch of a rocket created by a small private Indian company. Thanks to Skyroot Aerospace’s success, India has joined the rank of nations where a private company has independently developed its own launch vehicle and placed it into orbit.
The primary objective of the flight was to test the performance of the rocket’s key systems under real-world conditions. During the mission, engineers verified the operation of the propulsion system, avionics, telemetry, navigation, control, and guidance systems. The data collected during the launch will be used to further refine the vehicle and confirm its readiness for commercial flights. Skyroot Aerospace has already announced plans to conduct additional test missions prior to starting regular commercial launches.
The Vikram-1 rocket stands approximately 22 meters tall and is designed to deliver up to 350 kilograms of payload into low Earth orbit, or up to 260 kilograms into a sun-synchronous orbit. The structure is largely made of carbon-fiber composite materials, which reduces the launch vehicle’s overall mass and boosts its efficiency.
The company also announced the development of an upgraded version of the rocket featuring additional solid-fuel boosters. This modification is expected to increase Vikram-1’s payload capacity to 550 kilograms for low Earth orbit deployments. The new variant will be designated Vikram-1U and, according to Skyroot Aerospace’s schedule, is set to make its maiden flight in the first quarter of 2027.
During its first successful orbital flight, Vikram-1 carried several payloads and technology demonstrators developed by Indian and international entities. Among them were experiments from Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve Space, the German company DCUBED, and the SCOPE project created by Skyroot Aerospace itself. In addition to scientific and engineering experiments, the rocket also delivered a small art project and several symbolic postcards.
Vikram-1 utilizes a three-stage design with solid-fuel motors, complemented by a liquid-fueled upper stage. The upper stage is equipped with an engine manufactured using 3D-printing technology and executed the final maneuver to reach the target orbit and release the payload. This architecture makes Vikram-1 similar to a scaled-down version of Europe’s Vega rocket, as it also relies on multiple solid-propellant stages. Such a setup enables the creation of compact and relatively inexpensive launch vehicles for small satellites.
Skyroot Aerospace was founded in 2018 in Hyderabad by engineers Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, both former employees of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The company’s first launch took place in November 2022, when Skyroot tested the Vikram-S—a suborbital vehicle built to validate technologies that were later implemented across the Vikram rocket family.
The successful launch of Vikram-1 marks an important milestone in the growth of India’s private space industry, proving that the country is capable of building its own commercial launch vehicles for the small satellite market.
